Merrell Cemetery, located in the 4000 block of Merrell Road in Northwest Dallas, is one of the true pioneer burial grounds of Dallas County. When the cemetery began in 1840's, it sat by itself on the north side of Benjamin Merrell Survey, which consisted of 320 acres obtained as a grant from the Texas Emigration and Land Co., better known as the Peters Colony.
In September of 1965, the Merrell Cemetery Maintenance Association was chartered as a non-profit organization by the State of Texas with an unpaid Board of Trustees and officers to oversee collections and expenditures of funds for maintenance, repair and improvements. Today most of the officers and board members are directly connected to those pioneer families.
Each year the MCMA holds a picnic meeting of its participants, those with family buried in Merrell Cemetery. All participants and their guests are invited to these meetings, which are held in the open at the Cemetery when weather permits. Tables and chairs, barbeque and drinks are provided. Participants bring covered dish items if they want. There is always more than enough food for everyone.
